At 20, Cerruto went to live in the United States and later Spain. When he was 31, he studied at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Manuel Castillo de Sevilla [Miguel Manuel Castilla Superior Conservatory of Music of Seville] in Seville, Spain, earning a teacher's diploma in classical guitar. As a student, he started composing pieces for guitar and other ensembles. He worked at the Conservatorio Plurinacional de Música (COPLUMU) [Plurinational Conservatory of Music] in La Paz from 1990 to 2000, where he created the Classical Guitar department along with Kazutoyo Ito and Gentaro Takada.
